Five are from the United States, but only one Utahn survived the rigorous audition. Joshua Wright, a year-old master's candidate at the University of Utah, carries the banner for his hometown of Salt Lake City in the Bachauer Foundation's flagship event.
That home-field advantage can feel more like an extra dose of pressure, though, as Wright knows well. He competed in the Bachauer's Young Artist division in , and the pressure got to him. Wright has done some growing up since then and brings a different attitude to this year's competition.
To be able to give back, and show them my hard work, will be a great and rewarding experience. Wright began studying piano at age 5 with his grandmother, Marlene Larson, who instilled in him a love of music and recognized his talent.
A few years later he heard Ryan Brown, of Utah's Five Browns piano quintet, perform with the Utah Symphony at age 11 or 12, and told his parents he wanted to do that. His parents arranged for lessons with Susan Duehlmeier, director of the University of Utah's piano program, and Wright got busy.
It was only a few years before he, too, performed with the Utah Symphony on its Salute to Youth program. Duehlmeier describes Wright as inquisitive and passionate about music and consistent in his efforts. She credits him with possessing "a wonderful lyrical gift" that lends honesty to his playing, especially in works by his favorite composers, Chopin and Ravel.
Wright is endearingly human, though. Duehlmeier smiles at the memory of his teenage obsession with golf, a game he still loves.
She believes keeping balance in his life has made him a better artist. It takes many years to prepare a student for international competitions. Wright learned and recorded all of Chopin's difficult etudes at age 14 as one step in his musical journey.
The early acquaintance with Chopin paid off when he was selected last April to compete in the preliminary round of the Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. America's Got Talent Wiki Explore. Season Wildcard Show. Other Seasons. Explore Wikis Community Central.
